FAQ’s About Therapy Intensives
-
Instead of meeting for one 50-minute session or 90-minute session a week with intensives you engage in extended immersive sessions that can range from 2 hours to half a day and these sessions can take place weekly, monthly, or multiple days in a row depending on what you want to focus on. This allows you to go deeper faster and to really focus in on the areas where healing is needed.
-
We start with a consultation to make sure an intensive is right for you and then a thorough and extended assessment where we set goals, set you up with somatic and resourcing practices, and do all the prep needed to make the most of your intensive time. After that the intensives are tailored to you and your schedule. We can meet 3 or 4 days in a row for half days so that you can see real progress over the course of a week or extended weekend, we can meet twice a week for 2 hours over the course of 3 weeks, we can meet once or twice a month for 3-4 hour long sessions. Whether you need to see some relief in a week, you can more easily arrange childcare or adjust your work scheduled for a weekend, you want to see quicker healing with enough space and time in between for additional processing, we can develop an intensive schedule that works for you.

We start by engaging in practices that connect your nervous system, mind and body, to a sense of wellbeing. If you want to do a shorter intensive we might stop there with just focusing on helping you get to know your nervous system and build your resourcing toolbox. We identify the pattern or specific area you want to focus on and then we engage in some processes that help us to identify memories, experiences, or past wounds that are preventing progress in that area. You can also come in with a sense of the memories, past relationships, or challenges you would like to reprocess. The we use somatic practices, bilateral stimulation, and other mind-body techniques to reprocess those experiences, reduce the emotional weight they hold, make new meaning of those experiences, and build your ability to create new patterns that serve you better.

That depends on what you and your partner want to work on! An intensive can focus on one specific argument or current challenge or an area or pattern in your relationship. We start with a consultation to make sure an intensive is right for you then we do a thorough and extensive assessment and set goals so we can make the most of your intensive. The intensive is immersive and active and involves exploring patterns, working through conflicts in sessions, building new knowledge of each other, digging deep into attachment patterns, making clear decisions and commitments about your relationship, and trying brand new ways of understanding each other through exercises and practices. Our couples therapy intensives are rotted in PACT couples therapy.

With traditional therapy it takes a few sessions typically to assess and understand what needs to be addressed. Then it takes more sessions to get into deep work because part of each session is catching up on what has gone on in the past week or two. Also, it is really challenging to pick up exactly where you left off last time. It is so frustrating to be on the verge of a major breakthrough, insight, or transformation only for time to be up. Healing still takes time and intensives do not at all rush the healing process. They can provide a boost or jumpstart for clients who feel stuck and need to get through a significant piece of therapeutic work so they can do the rest of their healing from a more easeful, more well resourced place. They can also provide some of the immediate relief needed before longer-term work starts or they can stand alone to address more specific issues or challenges.
